Good post, and - LOL you nailed me, Adam. I'm a philosophy graduate and (referencing Steve's comment at Phatic) a mere commenter! Man, that makes me, like, the lamest NPC ever... In that case, who's the DM and what does that say about him? Combine and develop that concept with respect to puppet masters at D5GW and, well, that could actually be rather interesting.
I wouldn't say that cross-purposes is totally right. Opinion-product and Linden-dollars (yep, check Isaacolias Ra's pad out in SL) are both convertible to real-world money and other opportunities. The former are particularly so (indeed valuable, even, for the best) for we of the black-turtleneck crowd. lol! And, by the way, Olias was my Magic User's name in D&D way back when - instantly dropped it into SL.
You're spot-on with regard to the need, I would say an absolute human need, for play. We also have an absolute need for abstract thought, for without it we are chimps - or at least I'd feel beastly. (see tdaxp of late) I'd also say that man's tendency to seek and achieve 'altered states' with drugs and alcohol somehow fulfills the combination of these two needs.
Oops, here I go again - commenting too long. Hey, I can't blog - it's just too impractical to do most of the time as I, into my third decade, enjoy sleep more and more. And, you, who once questioned your own blogging,...are now on your third! Diversified, even!
Send me an email to my hotmail account, would ya? I'll be in HellA starting next weekend for that DHS conference. It'd be great to see you again, and talk more this time. I'm going to try and set something up (dinner and drinks) with Matt of MountainRunner for Sunday... I think I mentioned this a few weeks ago.

"Many pundits have noted that the analog model of the blogosphere is the yellow journalism and political pamphleteering of the industrial age. I reject such analysis as simplistic. High-traffic partisan blogs certainly bring to mind Thomas Paine, but there are many others that work along a more collaborative model–conducting debates and symposiums across a broad political spectrum."

Well said. Whirled Views (rather liberal) "reaching out" to the likes of the decidedly Libertarian Zenpundit on a fairly regular basis (and vise versa) each play off the other in a positive respect. Or more personally the political differences between say, myself and you or Adrian Martin. Unlike the uber-popular and damn near sectarian bloggers many of whom wouldn't dream of engaging the "other side" in intelligent debate or discussion we manage to at best to further each other's ideas in a constructive fashion, at worst disagree in a healthy and constructive fashion (or ribbing, humorous fashion as in Adrian and my own soccer/football "clashes" which serve an excellent pantomime for our political differences!)

And the longer I do this blogging thing the more extensive (and pan partisan) my "network" becomes. Of the hundreds of comments left at Soob I can count only one that delved into the realm of tedious ad hominem desperation and destructive disagreement for the sake of political divisiveness. Even considering the vast amount of exposure both tdaxp and coming anarchy receive, the vitriolic commentary is virtually non-existent. And when it comes around it doesn't long stay around.

Hah, I have to get back to WoW, so won't comment much at the moment except to ask whether a difference in currency -- fake gold pieces to opinions -- is significant enough to label one thing an MMORPG but not the other.
